Currently available for freelance assignments on Flame/Inferno and Effects Supervision. Have worked in: Hydraulx (Theatrical compositing) Ring of Fire (commercial) NBC (Promotion) Panopoly (Trailers, B’cast Design and CG) And ACME filmworks (Various HD and Commercial)
2001- 2005 Panopoly (L.A.)
Signing on in August, as Digital Effects Supervisor. Panopoly is a rapidly growing shop with editorial, effects and CG that specializes in Broadcast Design, Movie trailers, and DVD promotion. My duties include design and execution of a variety of projects for the above markets, typically on very short notice. Flame and Softimage are my principle tools, but I frequently make use of Photoshop, After effects and other desktop tools as well. Recently flew to Russia, to perform effects supervision on a spy movie shot by Oscar winner John Sullivan, and executed the effects back in L.A. Administrative tasks include helping to design new business plans and pitches and evaluate and recommend new hires. Since arriving at Panopoly, the company has grown 250% and has marketed DVDs whose total sales are over $1 Billion dollars.
1995-2001: Click3X
As Digital Effects Supervisor, I work daily with clients to develop concepts,
bids, and write treatments. I design effects and the methods of implementing
them. During effects production, I co-ordinate the efforts of Designers, CG,
and other Inferno artists to bring large, multi-faceted projects together.
I Provide effects supervision and direction on shoots, and as Senior Inferno
Artist,
I bring it all to fruition, every day. My responsibilities also include: interviewing
potential new hires, training new Inferno artists, and evaluating all new hardware
and software relating to effects and compositing. Traveled to the L.A. and
Atlanta Clicks to provide training, and foster co-operation between the branch
offices.
Write technical and aesthetic treatments for business pitches, and P.R. copy
when it's all over. I frequently use Softimage to augment the Inferno, to
lay out sets for live action productions, and to develop new effects. My extensive
experience, coupled with good people skills, allow me to w
work well with 3D folk, cel animators, artists, technicians, and of course, clients! I'm a team builder, and I can assemble a crew of artists and technicians to accomplish even the most complex projects.
1994-1995: Freelance
Produced two national commercials for Crayola utilizing cel, 3D and Harry animation,
acted as technical director for a large IBM/EPICOTT multi-media kiosk project,
freelanced at numerous Softimage and Flame assignments, Including Interface
design and 3d Animation for Time Warner's ground-breaking interactive shopping pilot project, and animation design and production for Lancitt Media's "Crinkleroot" pilot. Using my own Softimage, I wrote, designed and animated over 45 minutes of educational C.G. for Prentice Hall's
Chemistry and Biology videodisc series.
1993-1994: Ceasar Video Graphics
Employed in the twin roles of Animation Director and Technical Director. My
charter at Ceasar was to increase the diversity of work that this long-established
shop
could handle, by developing 3D, cel, desktop graphic, and "Mixo-Blendo" projects. Performed Harry/Kscope jobs daily, and designed/produced Caesar's first, large, cel project for National Geographic; 14 half-hour children's
nature shows with an animated host. I had to re-wire the shop to do it, and
won an Emmy for graphics and title design in the process.
1983-1993: Compugraph Designs
As founder and chief architect of Compugraph, New York's first all-D1 effects
shop, I was responsible for all artistic, technical, and administrative aspects
of the companies operation. Starting it as a one-man company, I grew Compugraph
to employ more than 15 Artists, animators, and producers.
My duties included:
Animation/Live action Director: Designed and implemented 3d and 2d animation. Created storyboards or re-worked others as needed to avoid problems. Developed concepts with agency creatives. Directed live action for seamless integration with special effects.
Creative Director /Executive Producer: Designed jobs, presentations, new business pitches, and supervised the design efforts of others. Bid, estimated and scheduled appropriate resources, and maintained artistic and technical levels at the highest standard throughout the shop. Hired and trained artists on Paintbox, Harry, and 3D platforms such as Alias, Softimage, and others. Worked with the diverse personalities of clients. Artists, and technicians to achieve a successful production experience.
Digital Effects Designer. Juggled aesthetic, technical and logistical
issues to create production solutions. Worked with 2&3D artists to achieve
desired effects and designs. Frequently acted as effects director or technical
consultant to
agencies before and during live shoot.
Chief Architect: Constantly monitored the state of the art and made long term predictions about hardware, industry trends, and standards. Recommended hardware purchases and wrote appropriate business plans. Administrative duties ran the gamut from dealing with staff and culture-building issues, to designing suites, machine rooms, office environments, and designing print advertising.
1979- 1983 Modern Telecommunications, Inc.
My first duty at this new company was to train a tape operations crew and establish
procedures for day-to-day operations. After completing this assignment, I moved
to on-line editing, where I became the resident effects editor, consulting
on, and editing all effects/animation projects. Worked closely with management
and
engineering to recommend new equipment purchases and modifications. Designed
and built New York's first "Special effects Suite", using New York's first ADO, first DDR, a CDL 1080 switcher modified to my design, and "Glowbox": a custom optical rescan system I designed and built to perform glows, flares, and neon effects in a real-time post production suite. Designed and executed an ADO demo reel that Ampex used as it's principle sales tool for 3 years. Acted as technical director for a weekly live satellite newscast to Japan, and won MTI it's
first Monitor and Film Festival awards for editing.
Career Achievements
With over 30 broadcast awards to my credit, I have built and staffed New York's first digital effects company, (at two separate locations) I have consulted on the design of similar facilities for IBM and WNET, and others. I consult with various manufacturers and have non-disclosure agreements with several leading innovators. I promote myself by teaching and lecturing to groups as diverse as Siggraph, NAPTE, BDA, and colleges like Pratt and F.I.T., where I am the author of a course currently being offered. Mostly though, I'm
a communicator with broad expertise in developing and creating visuals that
communicate ideas from creatives, to clients, production teams, and ultimately,
viewers.
